History of Tennis
The game of tennis is believed to have evolved in the 12th century in France from games such as Pelota and Palla. These were games that consisted of hitting a ball with the hand.
It was not until the 16th century that a racket and basic rules were introduced to assist in the formation of the game. It was also extremely popular with Royals who played frequently. It was King Charles IX who introduced the first official tennis event. He established three main tiers in which competitors would be placed. They consisted of apprentice, associate and master level.
In 1599 the first tennis rules book was published and was created by Forbet. This was just one of the reasons for the worldwide phenomenon of the popular sport.
The modern day game of tennis as we now know it was said to actually be invented by an English solicitor in the mid 1800′s. He is known to have played Pelota, which is a Spanish hand ball game on lawns which were used to play croquet. He along with his friend who originated from Spain started to play the game with a racket. They then created a tennis club in 1874 and arranged their first tennis event at Shrubland Hall.
The other theory is Welsh Major created the game he amply named Lawn Tennis for acquaintances during a garden party.
More recent history seen two of the most prestigious tennis events being born.
In 1877 the prestigious event known worldwide as Wimbledon was formed. The very first event saw 22 men compete for the winning title and a silver trophy. In 1884, women were able to compete in singles at the same venue as the men’s singles and doubles games. It was not until 1913 that mixed doubles games were introduced.
Wimbledon became one of the four events within the American Grand Slams in 1881 along with the Australian, French and US Opens. All were successful every year and are still going strong in today’s modern world of Tennis, allowing players around the world to compete against one another.
